According to sources,
Mexia head football coach and Athletic Director Lee
Wiginton announced to his players today that he
would be leaving the team to accept a position at
Midlothian ISD as the head football coach for the
Panthers. Although she would not make mention of
Wiginton's name, this was also confirmed by the head
of Midlothian ISD public relations Jana Hawthorne
who told Remo, "Your assumption is correct," when he
asked if Wiginton would be announced as the head
football coach at a special school board meeting
tonight.
Last season, the Midlothian Panthers football team
went 1-9 overall and finished last at 0-7 in
district 16-4A. On average, teams scored 37 points
against them while their offense averaged 21 points
per game.
'09 proved to be a tumultuous year for the
Midlothian football program on and off the field. In
mid-November, head football coach Robby Clark
resigned after an off-campus fight involving some of
the team's players (according to the Ellis County
Observer) vacating the head football coach position
with several games left to be played. Clark was not
directly involved in the incident.
In 2009 under Wiginton, the Mexia Blackcats posted a
9-3 overall record and fell to eventual 3A Division
II Texas state champion Carthage in the area round
of the playoffs.
The Blackcats started the season strong, winning
their first four games decisively, but faltered in
week 5 when they lost to West 28-27 after the
Trojans mounted one of the most unlikely comebacks
in recent Centex history. Their only other loss was
to eventual 3A quarterfinalist Lorena.
Our sources also stated the other front runner for
the Midlothian head coach job was Kent Scott of the
Prosper Eagles. Finishing 2009 as 3A state
quarterfinalists, Prosper went 11-2 on the season.
The Eagles were the 3A Division I Texas state
champions the previous year. However, it has been
confirmed that Wiginton will be named the head coach
at Midlothian and NOT Kent Scott.
The Mexia athletic program
is now in a tight predicament, without an
Athletic Director and with little time to spare to
find a suitable replacement.
