It almost seems like a no brainer for Bremond ISD as
they have officially chosen Mart's (now former)
defensive coordinator Bruce Brignac to take the
reins of the tradition rich Tiger program. Brignac
takes over for Jerry "Slugger" Hamrick who retired
after the 2009 season. Coach Hamrick coached at
Bremond for 13 years.
Brignac who has been on
the Panther staff since 2006 brings over a state
championship ring from Mart and the experience of
coaching some great teams. Brignac was an assistant
at Marlin High School prior to being at Mart.
"It's an emotional day
today." Brignac said when asked about leaving Mart.
"I have been with these kids since they were in
junior high. Mart has great seasons in their future
and it was a hard decision to make".
It may have been a hard
decision to make but Brignac knows that Bremond is a
great community and is tradition rich in athletics,
especially football. The Tigers recently played for
a state championship in 2007 losing to Munday 26-6.
The program speaks for itself and is known as a 1A
powerhouse. Brignac hopes to continue those
traditions as the new head coach.
Brignac will begin his
duties immediately as he plans on meeting Bremond
athletes and coaches tomorrow. He says Bremond has
some great years ahead of them too and feels very
blessed to start his head coaching career there.
Anyone that knows Brignac as a person and a coach
can bet the house that he will have great success
there.
"I have been very
fortunate to be in a place like Mart. Everyone from
the school board to the administration to the kids
have been very good to me. Mart is a great place to
be and I will miss it. I think of a former player of
mine Kenny Babbitt who is serving our country in the
middle east. Kenny always tells me that no matter
what you do or where you are once your a Panther
your always Panther. I will always have purple blood
in my veins and will miss my players and this
coaching staff very much."
The staff feels the
same way. After speaking with head coach Rusty Nail
a week ago when Brignac was named as in the top 3
for the Bremond job, he felt that this is a great
opportunity for Brignac and hoped he would be
selected. Nail has shown great support for him
throughout the whole hiring process but will also
miss having him on the Mart staff.
"One of the hardest
things I will have to do before I leave is tell the
softball team." said Brignac. I will miss those
girls and miss coaching softball here at Mart".
The Lady Panthers are expected to have a
tremendous season this year. Brignac is an
assistant for Mart softball.
And with that being
said, Brignac demonstrated his attention and
devotion to an entire program and not just football.
Leading one to believe he will do well in his new
Athletic Director position at Bremond.
Supercentex.com wishes
Coach Brignac the best of luck.
