Highlanders, Highlassies Defeat Weatherford

The McLennan
Highlanders squeaked by the Weatherford Coyotes
71-68 tonight at The Highlands.
The game was close throughout the first half. MCC
built a six-point lead midway through the half but
Weatherford came back to take a one point lead with
six minutes to go. The Highlanders pulled away again
and led 31-25 at halftime.
MCC extended the lead to 10 with just over 15
minutes to play in the game but the Coyotes rallied,
taking a one-point lead on a Kenneth Stewart
3-pointer midway through the half. The Highlanders
regained the lead with a Trell Porter 3-pointer on
the next possession.
The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes.
Weatherford began to pull away late in the second
half and led by six with two and half minutes to
play. A pair of free throws from Nafis Richardson, a
dunk and free throw from Taylor Smith and a layup by
Tre Nichols put the Highlanders back on top by one
with a minute to go.
Nichols increased the lead to three with 14 seconds
on the clock but the Coyotes weren’t done.
Weatherford’s Darious Jones drained two free throws
with 4 seconds to go, cutting the Highlander lead to
one. T.J. Johnson sealed the win for MCC with two
free throws in the final two seconds.
Nichols led MCC with 17 points. Smith and Johnson
scored 15 each and Trell Porter added 11.
In women’s action, the McLennan Highlassies defeated
the Weatherford Lady Coyotes 93-81.
Weatherford scored first but MCC took the lead on
back-to-back baskets by Katie Pavlik less than a
minute into the game. The Highlassies built a
double- digit lead with 16:42 to go in the first
half and held the 57-35 lead at the break.
MCC extended the lead to 25 with 15:19 to play in
the game but Weatherford wasn’t done. The Lady
Coyotes cut the lead to 13 several times down the
stretch in the second half. The lead was cut to 10
with under a minute to play but time ran out on the
Weatherford comeback.
Sophomore Katie Pavlik led the Highlassies with 18
points and Nikkitti Scott added 17. Kanisha Clark
and Ashley Olvera scored 14 and 12, respectively.
Macy Wischmeier rounded out the Highlassies in
double figures with 11.
MCC returns to action on Saturday, traveling to
Grayson. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m. followed
the men at 4 p.m.
